History

The Vermont Captive Insurance Association is the largest trade association for captive insurance in the world. Established in 1985, the Association has grown to provide lobbying support on both the state and federal levels for its nearly 400 member companies. In addition, it hosts and supports professional education opportunities for the industry at large.

Vermont has been a leader in the captive insurance industry for over thirty years. In 1981, the Vermont Legislature passed the Special Insurer Act which was designed to provide a unique and attractive statutory framework for captive formation. These landmark regulations have become the model of captive regulation. Vermont's captive insurance statute has been modified continually to meet the needs of this dynamic, fast-paced industry. The Vermont legislature listens and is responsive; and Vermont has a team of regulatory professionals dedicated to serving captives. Throughout its history in Vermont, the captive insurance industry has received universal and enthusiastic support from the governors and state legislators.

Mission

VCIA will provide members with legislative leadership, education, opportunities for information-sharing and a network of mutual support with others who share objectives in order to ensure an environment favorable to the continued growth and health of the captive industry and the Vermont captive community.

This will be accomplished through an economically sound association that is actively governed and supported by a participative membership.
