A Night with the Lake Monsters

June 26th wasn’t just another Thursday for some of us at VCIA. After a full day of work, I grabbed my favorite cap and headed to Burlington — not just anywhere in Burlington, but to the iconic Centennial Field. Thanks to VCIA and VT CPA, a few lucky people were treated to tickets to watch the Vermont Lake Monsters play.

I showed up with one job: take photos. But the longer I was there, the more I found myself genuinely enjoying the experience — and impressed by how much there was to take in.

We had seats in a Field Level Box Suite, which offered a perfect view of the game, Champ the mascot, and one of those postcard-worthy Centennial Field sunsets. With hot pizzas, burgers, hot dogs, desserts, and unlimited soft drinks and snacks, no one left hungry.

Events such as these are a reminder of what VCIA is all about: community. Getting together with Vermont Society of CPAs allowed for people to connect outside the usual settings and talk in a more relaxed environment. VCIA has a long-term commitment to fostering connection and collaboration, and you will be able to see this yet again at VCIA’s Conference in August, where everyone will have a chance to engage and network.

Conversations were constantly being interrupted by cheers, clapping, and sudden gasps as a player made a move. The chatter flowed freely, but the focus never left the field.

For me, though, the highlight was Champ. Not only did we get to see him roaming around, we got hugs, photos, and plenty of laughs. The kids were absolutely thrilled — petting his soft fur, giggling at his wiggly eyes, and lighting up every time he danced by. Even as the game’s score began to disappoint the crowd, Champ never stopped moving, keeping spirits high and smiles wide — including mine.

And just when I thought the night couldn’t get better, we each received a special gift: a Champ-themed water bottle. Honestly, if I had just bought it at the merch stand, I don’t think it would’ve meant half as much. Opening it and seeing the Lake Monsters logo felt like a little gift from Champ himself — a moment that genuinely warmed my heart with Vermont pride.

The game was fun, the food was delicious, Champ was energetic, and overall this was the type of event that sticks with you. I can’t thank VCIA and VT CPA enough for putting together such a special evening.

Go Lake Monsters!
